Dr. Zaid Brifkani

President

I am originally from Duhok and migrated to the United States with my family in 1996.  I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a major in Microbiology and then worked in a basic science lab at Vanderbilt University for one year before pursuing a degree in Medicine from Ross University. I then returned to Nashville to do my residency in Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College. Afterwards, I obtained a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Florida and then an additional fellowship in Renal and Pancreas Transplant at Washington University in St. Louis, one of the 5 biggest transplant centers in the United States.

I have had special interest in research and my research at Meharry focused on the morbidities and complications in underserved patient populations. At the University of Florida, my research was on diabetic nephropathy and renal tissue regeneration. My research project at Washington University was on immunosuppression in HLA-matched kidney transplants.

When I am not doing medicine, I am interested in writing and I am currently working on a novel that tells the story of a young Kurd going through the Anfal period. I am also blessed to be part of a medical team that travels to Kurdistan annually to provide care and training and that has been a very humbling experience for me. I also consider myself a servant of the community with big passion for helping to empower the youth in our communities to be the best they are and to surround them with resources and support to achieve their goals. I am fortunate to be part of the Kurdish Professionals Group and I strongly believe we have a bright future with many big achievements with one voice and united efforts.

I am always willing to support and mentor any student interested in the biomedical field. I can be reached at drzaidbrifkani@gmail.com, @zaidbrifkanimd (twitter), zaidbrifkani (instagram), or on Facebook

While in this program, she will get one on one experience with patients and full exposure to the medical field all while being able to understand and appreciate the different professions.

The clinic she is currently assigned to is the Vanderbilt General Infectious Disease Clinic. While this clinic is accessible for patients with all types of infectious diseases, it’s primary focus is Hepatitis C as well as HIV. Dilman Yasin received her Master’s of Science in Healthcare Informatics in December 2017 from Lipscomb University. She completed her undergraduate degree at TN State University where she received a Bachelor’s in Dental Hygiene in 2014. She is a member of TN HIMSS as well as WITT and hopes to be involved with more organizations that provide resources and opportunities for women in STEM fields.

She is currently working at HCA in the Web Analytics Department where she analyzes data from over 150 websites throughout HCA’s platform. After working in the dental field for several years, she saw a need for better communication between the medical and dental entities and found Informatics to best suite her goals. Being a first generation college graduate gave her even more determination to complete her Master’s degree.

Her future goals include starting a dental consulting firm that will allow her to help dental professionals achieve success. She believes strongly in advocating for education among Kurds but especially women. “ If you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” Dilman can be reached via LinkedIn- Dilman Yasin, Instagram- Dilyasin or via email- dilmanyasin26@gmail.com
